The world of single-serve coffee got a little tastier last year when Keurig, developer of the popular K-Cup single-serve brewing systems, introduced the Vue V700, its next generation of brewing machines. The company launched its first machine in 1998 and has since gained wide-spread popularity among java lovers for its speed and convenience. Keurig’s brewers work by running hot water through a small single-serve pack of coffee, tea, hot chocolate or other beverages. To the dismay of existing Keurig fans, the company’s K-Cups are not compatible with the new brewer. However, Vue cups have improved technology and are partially recyclable.

As a grad student who drinks far too much coffee, I was skeptical that the Vue could deliver a quality similar to that of freshly ground coffee beans in my traditional coffee maker but I was excited for a hassle-free experience with the touch of a button. After finishing the entire Favorites Variety Pack that included various coffee roasts, herbal tea, iced tea and hot cocoa, I was impressed with the machine.

 – KEURIG VUE V700 REVIEW –

DESIGN:

(9 out of 10) The Vue V700 looks sleek and modern on the counter top and is a perfect size for the home or workplace. The color touch screen is one of the coolest new features of the Vue and makes selecting beverage type, size and strength very intuitive. My favorite feature on the brewer is simple: the lower tray of the Vue pulls out allowing a larger to-go mug to fit into the brewer. The 74oz. water reservoir located on the side of the brewer is removable and easy to refill in the sink. My only complaint is that the brewing process is noisy but it’s a minor knock to an otherwise great product.

CONVENIENCE:

(10 out of 10) The most notable perk of the Vue V700 brewer is its convenience. My morning routine consisting of waiting in line at the coffee shop and arriving late to meetings has been replaced with popping in a Vue pack at home and heading out the door with my coffee one minute later. I appreciate not having to mess with coffee filters and grounds and cleanup consists of tossing the Vue pack into the garbage (the packs are partially recyclable). My favorite convenience factor this summer has been the iced coffee. Typically, I would need to keep a pitcher of pre-brewed iced coffee in the fridge all summer, but now I can enjoy fresh brewed glass of iced coffee on the spot. Living on my own, I have also enjoyed not having to brew an entire pot of coffee when I only want one cup. The only downside with the Vue V700 is that the brewer does take a minute to warm up when you initially turn it on assuming you don’t leave it on all day. Can you say spoiled?

CUSTOMIZATION:

Vue V700 Review
(9 out of 10) The Vue V700 brews coffees, teas and iced beverages and I was able to find an entire aisle featuring a variety of different flavors at my local supermarket. Through an easy-to-use touchscreen on the top of the brewer I was able to customize my beverage type, size, strength and even temperature. My roommates and I prefer different flavors of coffee so it has been awesome to have the ability to customize each cup to our specifications. My only knock is that it would be nice if Keurig had incorporated the ability to brew espresso and other frothy drinks.

COFFEE QUALITY:

(8.5 out of 10) As an avid coffee drinker, I was quite impressed with the Vue’s coffee quality. After trying several different coffees and tea packs, my favorite flavor has been the Starbucks French Roast. Surprisingly, my kitchen smells like a freshly brewed pot of coffee when I make a cup which speaks to the quality of the grounds. Teas taste similar to brewed tea and the iced coffee is excellent. However, the premium packs including my beloved Starbucks French Roast don’t stack up against a cup of coffee from Starbucks.

VALUE:

(7 out of 10) At $199.99, the Keurig Vue V700 is reasonably priced for its functionality and is in line with comparable single-serve brewers. On a per cup basis, however, Vue packs can range from 75 cents to a dollar. The value here comes from enjoying hassle-free, freshly brewed coffee within minutes but it doesn’t come cheap. As an on-the-go young professional, I value speed and convenience more than most but I probably wouldn’t pay much more than a dollar for one of these packs. That said, my kitchen is now stocked with a cabinet full of Vue packs. Hopefully the entrance of new competitors into the single-serve brewing market will drive prices down in the future.

THE BOTTOM LINE:

For the coffee lover looking to upgrade to their morning routine, we highly recommend the Kerurig Vue V700. We were impressed with the Vue’s design features and versatility and we’re eager to try more seasonal packs this fall including the new Pumpkin Spice Latte, one of our all-time favorites, released last month by Green Mountain Coffee. This brewer delivers high quality coffee within minutes and without hassle. Convenience is king in the mornings and this machine has certainly been a key addition to our kitchen.
