Oh Golf… I have such a love/hate relationship with this sport. I always enjoy getting out on the course, but depending on how may game is that day, it can either be enjoyable or it can make me want to throw my clubs in the lake and be done with this sport all together. I know not everyone is as impatient as me, but I’d say I’m a good test when it comes to anything that could possibly help improve my game and my confidence on the course. So when the ULT-X Rangefinder from TecTecTec arrived at my doorstep, I was eager to hit the links.

Design
If you’re familiar with TecTecTec and their collection of Rangefinder designs, then you’ll notice right away that the ULT-X Rangefinder is a step up from all their previous models. The white and black with defined edging gives it a modern look and the button placement still provides that familiarity we’ve come to rely on with most rangefinders out there today. It’s so nice looking I didn’t want to cover it up with the optional accessory (Red Silicone case), however, it’s better to be safe than sorry. The Silicone case is actually easy to slip on and off and helps to protect the ULT-X from any scratches and debris. The ULT-X Rangefinder has a nice little pop out faceplate that enables the slope feature. Simply pull the faceplate outward, and the display will show the slope angle and the yardage correction based on slope measurement. Push the faceplate back in to disable the slope mode and clear up the display. The faceplate also sits out a little further from the lens compared to their other designs, which helps to provide a little more shading from the sun to eliminate any lens glare. There is also a handy little notch near the eye piece to attach the included wrist band so you can hang it from your wrist or hook if desired.
Ease of Use
The ULT-X Rangefinder is super simple to use. One button to power on quickly and another to change modes. It will also shut off automatically after 30 seconds of non-use to save battery. To adjust the focus, simply turn the eyepiece until everything looks like it is in focus. Once everything looks clear, you can select the right mode for what you are looking for. The first mode “M1” is the normal and default mode. This mode allows you to simply aim at a single target while pressing the power button once briefly to get a measurement of distance. There is also a “Scan Mode” while in “M1” that allows you to hold the power button down while scanning the terrain. Simply hold the power button down and pause over the area you wish to see a reading. I found this one easy to use if the target was within a 100 yards. Anything further than that (or if you don’t have a steady hand), you’ll want to use “M2: Pin Mode + Vibration Alert”. While in this mode, you can aim to the left or right of the target, press and hold the power button down and pan back and forth over the target until you feel a vibration and the numbers lock. Or you can also pull the faceplate outward while in “M3: PinSlope Mode + Vibration Alert” and get a slope reading with both the actual distance and the elevation adjusted “play like” distance. I found myself in this mode most of the time.
Accuracy
I was able to golf with several different people that also had different brands of rangefinders over the course of 3 weeks. I would say 99% of the time we all had the same measurements. The accuracy is pretty much spot on, but with the ability to scan and lock on a target with vibration and added slope feature really helps boost my confidence on selecting the right club. Plus you can change from meters to yards by holding down the Mode button for 3 seconds.
Value
When it comes to features vs pricing, tectectec has a pretty good grasp on the true value of their products. The ULT-X Rangefinder offers everything I was looking for in a price point that wasn’t too bad. It’s not the cheapest one on the market, but definitely not the most expensive either. It falls somewhere in the middle for the price, but the lightweight design and ease of use really makes this model worth the money.
