Mizuno Golf set out with four goals in mind when they decided to upgrade their JPX line of “game improvement” irons for 2013. The Mizuno JPX-825 Irons were engineered to be more forgiving on mishits, deadly long, better sounding and absolutely beautiful to look at.  Utilizing an extremely thin and hot club face by way of MAX COR technology JPX-825 irons are said to have the largest sweet spot in Mizuno iron history and deliver the highest allowable Coefficient of Restitution (COR). The end result is an iron set that was designed for higher handicapped golfers who want to go long and score low.

Mizuno JPX-825 Irons Review

What you’ll first notice about this set of irons is that the 4, 5, 6 and 7 irons utilize MAX COR technology for higher ball speeds to focus on distance while the 8 iron through gap wedge utilize Mid COR technology, which delivers greater precision on approach shots. The JPX-825 line of irons is touted by Mizuno to be “the ultimate combination of amazing distance, extreme forgiveness, and great feel that will help you play better, more consistent golf today.”

Mizuno JPX-825 Irons Review

Recently we hooked up with our good friends at Mizuno Golf once again to see what was cooking. They quickly dropped a set of JPX irons in our lap and we were off to the range. 1086 range balls later were here to share the results with you! Enjoy my friends…

– Mizuno JPX-825 Irons Review –

Feel:

(8 out of 10) The JPX-825’s feel nice at approach, while swinging them feels down right awesome! The weighting is impressive and in our opinion they have a balanced feel throughout each club – 4 iron though the gap wedge. At impact they produce solid contact without any odd or stinging vibrations. The sound that comes off the face is crisp and pleasing to the ears. While testing these irons on the range more than a few of our testing crew claimed that the JPX-825 irons evoke a subtle confidence that translated to fewer mishits and a very enjoyable day at the range.

One small dislike we had were the stock grips, but if you like, Mizuno does offer 12 custom grip options if you’re picky golf addicts like us.

Design:

(9.5 out of 10) If we were judging the 825’s on pure looks alone we would have to give Mizuno a 10 out of 10 in this department. They are simply handsome too look at. There’s no denying that, and by all accounts some of the best looking irons you’ll see on the course this season.

The engineers at Mizuno also packed these irons with some exiting technology that created a remarkably forgiving iron set (more on that later) that is also sneaky long!

Distance:

(7 out of 10) On average we saw +5.4 yards gained when compared to similar cavity back / game improvement irons. While these aren’t the longest irons we’ve tested recently, they do pack a punch that is gratifying and useful when playing into the wind or stretching for a few extra yards on an approach into a devilish par 5. In our opinion the distance gained isn’t as impressive as the forgiveness and consistence the JPX-825’s are capable of.

(Note: these irons were tested against Nike VR Pro Cavity and Cleveland Golf 588 Forged CB Irons. With Taylormade Lethal golf balls)

Consistency:

(9 out of 10) On shots within the club face’s sweet spot we found that these irons are remarkably consistent when it comes to distance management. On average there was only a small discrepancy of +/- 2.6 yards. We hit 100’s of balls and came away truly impressed with the JPX’s consistency.

On mis-hits distance consistency goes out the window as you might expect. Luckily the JPX-825 irons have a massive sweat spot which we found throughout our testing sessions is easy to find time and time again. With the 825’s common mis-hits became less common and all together.

Workability:

(6 out of 10) With massive amounts of forgiveness packed into these cavity back’s there isn’t a lot of room for shot shaping in our opinion. We enjoyed many a long and straight ball flight from these irons, but when it came to working a fade or draw we were a little less than impressed. That being said, they are good for a little 7 or 8 yard draw (or fade) when needed if you’re dead set on working the ball against the wind or cutting a corner.

Forgiveness:

(9.5 out of 10) Forgiveness is a term used widely and wildly by golf club manufactures these days. While almost every new iron set promises maximum forgiveness, rarely do they deliver on their claims. Then walks in the Mizuno JPX-825’s to give hackers hope!

While testing the JPX-825’s we noticed considerably less miss-hits while on the range. Heel and toe shots preformed as you’d expect them to… wild and inconsistent. Though with ball strikes that were mildly off-center we noticed very little difference in performance. Distance on off-center shots was also impressive as was consistency. Leaving a little room for operator error.

Value:

(8 out of 10) Depending on how serious you take the game of golf and what stage of improvement (or un-improvement)  you’re currently at, the value of these irons might differ, but likely not by much. We’d love to find these irons on sale around $599 instead of the suggested $699 retail price if possible.

The Bottom Line:

If you’re a mid to high handicap golfer who’s looking for a new set of irons to take to the course and hone your game we suggest you take a close look at the Mizuno JPX-825 Irons for yourself. The best way to go about that is to get your hands on a set at your local sporting goods store or pro shop and give em’ a whack on the testing range. We feel in love with these irons for their stunning good looks, trust worthy consistency and impressive forgiveness. Which in our testing sessions all added up to more hit fairways and lower totals on the scorecard.
