Cart bags aren’t just for your granddad anymore! In recent years they’ve become lighter, more stylish and let’s be honest… more practical for the average golfer. Tour players have caddies for a reason and we have golf carts for a reason… to lug around our sticks, equipment and take the brunt of our frustrations when a duck-hooked ball lands in the pond. For the 2013 season Taylormade has launched the 4th generation of their game changing cart bag the Catalina. The Catalina cart bag integrates a bold array of functionality and more aggressive styling with a mere 6.5 lbs of heft. Recently our good friends at Taylormade hooked us up with a Catalina to fully test and review on our own terms. Now after a month of abuse, good golf shots annnnnnd… not so good shots we’re happy to share our thoughts with you!

– The Review –

Design:

(9 out of 10) The Catalina was thoughtfully designed by true golf enthusiasts to make your clubs, apparel and equipment truly accessible. While that might sound like a statement straight from the Taylormade PR team, we found it to be 100% true throughout our review sessions with this cart bag. The bag itself is shockingly lightweight and has a crush proof design that makes it ideal for travel. Not so shockingly… we found the integrated cooler to be AMAZING! It easily holds six 12 oz. beers beverages with ice and was designed with a nifty drain to quickly expel any melted ice or spills. Creating less clean up along the way! Not only does the cooler provide a handy place to stash your drinks it also keeps them cold for hours. Additionally we were really impressed with Taylormade’s attention to detail with this golf bag. The 14 way divided top makes quick work of finding the right club and eliminates the clubs from getting bunched together at the grips.

Storage:

(10 out of 10) Designed with more storage than you’ll probably ever need, the Catalina cart bag has nine pockets in all and would double quite nicely as a luggage bag should your lady send you packing! Heck it even comes with a mini fridge… what more could a guy ask for? Seriously though, this bag has two majorly huge pockets for apparel, shoes etc.. and the rest are designed to hold your tees, balls, gps/range finder and your personal items. While yes this bag starts out lightweight at just under 7 lbs, it’s very easy to make it heavy, fast!

Durability:

(8 out of 10) The zippers, fabric and stitching are all very well done and made of high quality materials. We were very impressed with the inner tube of the Catalina and Taylormade’s patented “crush proof” design. If the bag should ever get sat on, stepped on or pinched during travel, the innards won’t dent or break. The bag simply springs back to its original shape, unlike most traditional cart bags that are plagued with a bit of a gangster lean after getting roughed up. All in all we found the Catalina to be quite durable, though towards the end of our 1 month testing session with it we did start to notice some wear across the fabric that covers the top of 14 way divider. Nothing major, but something to keep an eye on.

Value:

(8 out of 10) Priced at just $179 the Catalina is a pretty darn good value in our opinion. It’s got everything going for it including massive storage pockets, an umbrella sleeve, and a 14 way full length divider that takes the pain out of pulling your 3 iron for that 260 yard stinger shot from the rough.

The Bottom Line:

If you’re the type of guy who likes to save his long walks for the beach and cannot compute the term “packing light” we think the TaylorMade Catalina Cart Bag might just be the perfect golf bag for you. We can’t say enough about it’s organizational qualities and storage. It’s an absolute beast! But beyond it’s aggressive physique it remains lightweight and a joy to bring on trips. If you’re looking for a new cart bag this season we highly recommend you check out the Catalina cart bag for yourself.
