Q: What’s better after a day outside than a Nut Brown in front of the fireplace. A: Nothing. That’s why I was excited about Full Sail Brewery’s Brown Ale from the Pub Ale Series.

Full Sail previously only made this available to those who visited the brewery in person. The new Pub Ale Series however brought these brews out of the brewery and into the bottle for off-premise consumption. Described as a “A smooth, malty & easy drinking dark beer” this beer is available through the end of March.

  • Malts:  2 row pale, crystal and chocolate malts
  • Hops: Fuggle, Mt. Hood
  • IBU: 31
  • ABV: 5.8%

The color of this is exactly what you look for in a Nut Brown — deep brown, dark chestnut color. The head was significantly lower than pictures on the Full Sail site showed. While slightly reddish in color, it wasn’t as burgundy as the Full Sail website shows. The aroma isn’t overly fragrant. It has a carmel-y smell that is somewhat coppery and chocolaty that is sweet.

The first taste of this ale is sweet and has a light caramel malt taste. It is a bit acidic at first as well which wasn’t overly welcomed. After the initial flavor the malt reigns with Chamomile and chocolate hints.

Full Sail’s Nut Brow ends malty with copper taste that is somewhat chalky. A thicker mouthfeel would be appreciated as well especially in the colder months when this brew is available.

Full Sail Nut Brown Ale - Brew Review
Overall this beer accomplishes what it set out to - to as it is a "smooth, malty & easy drinking dark beer." As a Western/Central New Yorker, I've been spoiled a bit by Ithaca's Nut Brown ale which is a better beer than Full Sail's. If you are looking for a typical, perfectly good brown ale, you won't be disappointed.
