As Spotify announced its big plan to include more audio and video content this Summer, the world continued to turn the same way on Tuesday, with all the latest tracks continuing towards our way. There’s much to choose from; Maroon Five is still churning out singles from last year’s V, a screamer of a song from Bullet For My Valentine, and a “good thing” from Sage the Gemini.
With the rate streaming music is evolving these days, who knows what yet unknown things are going to be on Spotify next week – make sure you check out these new songs before next Tuesday shows up.
10. Miss Narcissist by Courtney Love
Courtney can expect to be in front of new audiences while touring with Lana Del Ray this summer, who are very likely to have been born years after Hole’s iconic Live Through This was released. In the same vein as Celebrity Skin & Nobody’s Daughter, Love takes aim at a ‘certain kind of female” who could perhaps make better choices at being a full contribution to society, with her classic ‘you’re not fooling anybody’ attitude. The song itself is a blend of condescending poetry, raspiness, and wailing. All we’ve come to expect and appreciate about Ms. Love.
9. Will I See You Again by Christian Lopez Band
If you are held against your will by being forced to hear updates about American Idol when you don’t even watch the show (like me), you might recognize Christian Lopez as the sunny eyed youngster from West Virginia, who appeared in a couple of seasons but didn’t walk away with top placements. Or there’s a chance you might have heard Will I See You Again as part of his five song EP he released last year. Whatever the case may be, you can see why Christian was given the chance to record a full album; Will I See You Again has Appalachian all over it, it’s beautifully written, and is full of gusto from the young singer/songwriter. It will likely make American Idol wish they had tapped into his full potential when they had him.
8. Pirouette by MADE IN HEIGHTS
If you’ve ever needed an excuse to twirl around aimlessly, it’s highly recommended that you listen to Pirouette by MADE IN HEIGHTS. Fans of the minimal electro/r&b duo will recognize Pirouette as having been out since late last year, but included on this week’s list to give the rest of us a chance to catch up on the gentle awesomeness in motion that is MIH. Pirouette is nestled between other can’t miss songs, textured with a minimal design as to not overwhelm, but leave you begging for more with each listen.
7. Secrets by Tiesto, Vassy, KSHMR
When taking a song from a radio edit to a club mix, it’s important that you can imagine the song being played in an actual nightclub. So is the case in Secrets, as you can practically feel the blasts of cool air billowing from the rafters. Tiesto shows his prowess throughout the song, only needing a few well-chosen variations to get his ‘Secrets’ ready for its nightlife.
6. Love Is The Future by Hot Chip
There’s something to be said about a band that ages well and maintain their staying power, like the Rolling Stones. Such is becoming the case with Hot Chip, and made abundantly clear on their sixth studio album. Their sound is full of exuberance this time around, and still maintains a distance ahead of other indie dance bands. From the album title that cheekily asks, Why Make Sense? the decision to continue on makes perfect sense from this perspective.
5. California Rain by Goldroom feat. Nikki Segal
Josh Legg warns on Goldroom’s instagram page of ‘apologies in advance of for making you sick of palm trees, sunset, and ocean. Sorry not sorry.’ Such is the vibe on California Rain (hint: it doesn’t rain that often in California). The song moves along with no effort, and its sunny disposition is increased ten fold with the addition of Nikki Segal as Goldroom’s new live singer. Perfect for your pool playtime playlist.
4. Heavydirtysoul by Twenty One Pilots
With more new music than any one person can handle, I typically hesitate to feature more than one song off the same album to give new artists a fighting chance. An exception had to be made with Twenty One Pilots, as Heavydirtysoul is such a change of pace from Stressed Out, and quite irresistible from start to finish. With its pepped out energy, it’s easy to imagine as the soundtrack to a high stakes (and high speed) break dance competition.
3. Strangers by Langhorne Slim & the Law
A little bit country, a little bit O Brother Where Art Thou, Strangers jumbles these elements up in the best way possible, while throwing in lines like ‘I was born and been running since/Been doing things that make no sense/There’s a devil in me/that I gotta set free’ to give it a bluesy devil may care (literally) attitude. The end result is a romping good time, a foot tapper and a hand clapper, one to dance around the campfire to.
2. Beat of My Drum by Powers
If you like the energy of Maroon 5 but could do with a slicker but not necessarily polished (in a good way) Adam Levine, look no further than Beat of My Drum by Powers. Even better, though not clearly apparent on Beat of My Drum, Powers is backed by a frontman AND a frontwoman. This duo, comprised of Mike Del Rio and Crista Ru, has steadily been picking up speed in recent months, and are likely to take off with the lively pace on Beat of My Drum.
1. In For the Kill by Shamir
There’s a good chance that you might be a fan of Shamir’s without even knowing so – his hit ‘On The Regular’ provides the background music for the Android’s Watch commercial. The bloggersphere is blowing up with hype and excitement over Shamir’s style, talent, and incomparable voice. In For the Kill takes some horns and squeaks them up a bit, throwing in a little bit of funk, jazz, and neo soul for good measure. The result is a highly unique track that goes down extra smooth.
