Coming at you this week is new music full of all genres left right and center. The big releases are by way of the new Britney Spears & Iggy Azalea duet, a potential summer anthem from Pia Maria with help from Chris Brown & Tyga, and a revised rendition of Fetty Wap with some new, yet familiar, guests.
53 songs are currently gracing the list — there’s way too much new music goodness out there right now to just let it pass you by. Head over to Spotify and don’t miss out!
10. Moony Eyed Walrus by Cayucas
It’s that time of year where the warm weather related activities are everywhere you look – Winter is dead and #SummerIsComing, as the band states on their Twitter page. Alas Cayucas has all the right sounds of Summer, continuing on with their brand of ‘sunny side pop’ made popular by their 2013 album, Bigfoot. The sound here seems evolved as well, as if the last album was a trip to a sleepy beach town, Moony Eyed Walrus feels like your vacation has been upgraded to a Costa Rican adventure. Perfect to play in the background of your Memorial Day Summer cliches filled pool party.
9. Young & Unafraid by The Moth & the Flame
This talented alt rock band from LA cites a ton of heavy hitting producers on their latest album, who have worked with the likes of Interpol, Beck, & Sujfan Stevens. On Young & Unafraid young is proven to be a state of mind by dismissing notions of how one should act when they are older. Look no further than the band’s cover art to symbolize this powerful message – it, along with the accompanying music video, features Neal Unger, a 60 year old skateboarder showing the will of the human spirit, no matter what age. A defiant anthem that will make you run towards, not away from, cherishing every year you get older.
8. River by Leon Bridges
From the first strum, the latest from Leon Bridges sounds like it’s coming from the back porch, while the river rolls on in the background. Bridges has created a huge stir as of late, with many comparing him to the great sounds of Soul, including Sam Cooke, Otis Redding & Al Green. River doesn’t need much accompaniment to make its presence felt- profound and moving, you will be tempted to join in with him and his choir.
7. Speedom by Tech N9ne, Eminem & Krizz Kaliko
While it’s not exactly a song fit for your car stereo, Speedom must be experienced to hear the tongue twister rhymes & supersonic speed of this seriously talented trio. Other MCs are likely to have one listen and declare, “I don’t know how to make songs like that, I don’t know what words use” – it’s a dizzying five minutes, roller coaster speed fast, when it’s over it leaves you thinking: Whoa. That was intense. Let’s go again!
6. Coffee by Wale, Miguel
A smooth and pleasing sound on this one— not too intense, not too slow, kind of like that moment while you’re waiting for your coffee in the morning to be ready. The background feels more futuristic and evolved from Miguel, and the subject title ‘Coffee’ is perfect coming from the man (Wale) who recently paired with Jerry Seinfeld to make an album about ‘nothing.’
5. Burn With Me by Whilk & Misky
Two extra points most be given for the clever band name while reviewing the track. It was only last year that we had the first sip from this duo, and have been eagerly waiting for the next taste ever since. The song has a keyed up vibe, coupling stray plucks with a voice that’s on the edgier side for indie music. The resulting sound certainly stands apart from all the other bottles on the bar.
4. I Can Change by Brandon Flowers
Showing no signs of stopping, Brandon Flowers delivers yet another notable single (this brings the current tally to four) from his latest album, The Desired Effect…that’s not even out yet! (That all ‘changes’ May 18th.) A power alt pop ballad at its best, I Can Change grabs you and doesn’t let you go. Perhaps you don’t feel Brandon really CAN change, but the energy of the song demands you at least hear him out. As he declares I can bend, I can break, I can shift, I can shake – just TRY to fight the temptation to break out into a pseudo-choreographed (think music video) dance.
3. California Roll by Snoop Dogg with Stevie Wonder, Pharrell
One of what I consider to be one of the most stand out sounds of 2015 so far has been, a pleasant surprise, Mr. D Oh Double G. All three of his releases have been fully present and credible tracks. What’s more with this very ‘NOW’ sound, is that it is not easily duplicated – not an easy feat in today’s over insta’ed world. Showcasing just exactly how California ‘rolls’ Stevie Wonder and Pharrell are luminous additions to the track – putting you in a Cali state of mind no matter where you happen to be on the globe.
2. Here by Alessia Cara
Usually when you throw around the title of ‘budding R&B princess’ the song topics of said princess typically revolve around living a glamorous life, full of not so realistic expectations of love. Not the case here, as Cara sounds pretty disillusioned ‘bout that life, referring to herself as an “antisocial pessimist, who usually doesn’t mess with this.” ‘Here’ has the potential to be 2015’s answer to Royals, fully encapsulating a youthful sound with the matching nonconformist take on the world.
1. Go by The Chemical Brothers
Be careful with this one – it would be easy to dismiss ‘Go’ from its first few seconds as just another electro track, undistinguishable from the lot. But 22 seconds in you will here Q-tip’s signature “Unh” hinting at what he’s about to do. And when he takes off it’s a solid reminder of how great ‘Galvanize’ was/is the first time you hear(d) it. The gist of the song feels like a warped speed space exploration, taking you through new worlds, pumping you up during the ride. Perfect for the start of any run, no matter how far you intend to actually ‘go.’
