ECCO Golf shoes continue to make a splash in the world of golf as they gain more traction among professionals and amateurs along the way. As you may have read, previously we reviewed ECCO’s BIOM Hybrid’s and discovered that they were the shoe of choice by the great Freddy Couples. We were impressed by the quality and the creativity in the production of the BIOM Hybrid and recently the fine folks at ECCO sent over their BIOM G2’s for us to hit the course and perform our world-class testing process .
ECCO is known for their quality and dedicated production process. ECCO is one of the world’s leading footwear brands and is one of the few companies in the industry that is responsible for the entire manufacturing process, from beginning to end, which allows it to maintain a stringent quality control process. CEO, Dieter Kasprzak, actually designed the company’s first golf shoe in 1996, which was for him and his golf partner, Karl Toosbuy. Karl founded ECCO and believed that they could make a better, more comfortable product by following the human foot and according to Dieter, that has been the goal ever since. This Spring, we took our BIOM G2’s to the range and the golf course to see how the they held up on the links, here’s what we discovered…
Design:
The BIOM G2 is designed to give you the comfort, traction, and feel that is usually reserved for the pro’s. These shoes feature soft leather uppers which are built to be extremely lightweight, as to not add undo stress on the foot while out on the course. The developers tout that the anatomical last shape of the BIOM was developed by scanning the feet of 2,500 athletes to provide ideal levels of support. The shoes also feature a thin midsole which will help bring your feet closer to the playing surface which allows you to get a real good feel for what kind of traction you have underneath your feet. The shoe is built with a soft, breathable, and strong yak leather uppers. The shoe is also designed with HYDROMAX and an anti-stain formula for protection when the weather gets a little rough. While you can choose from 6 different color options, it would have been nice to have more variety, or the ability to mix and max colors on the website. Overall, this is a well designed and constructed golf shoe.
Comfort:
This shoe remains very lightweight while delivering the durability of quality yak leather. Despite being lightweight the shoe feels quite sturdy and provides very nice support. We talked previously about its thin midsole which allows your feet to get close to the ground, but it is still able to provide all-day long support for those golfers that like to walk 18… or more. Throughout testing we were able to play 45 holes over the course of a weekend and walked every one of them. By the end of the weekend our feet still felt great. By controlling the entire production process, ECCO is able to keep a good eye on the build of your shoe and the attention to detail does not go un noticed.
Traction:
In our ECCO BIOM Hybrid review we noted the shoe was built for the golf course but also preformed great off the course if you desired. The BIOM G2 is strictly a golf shoe for on the course as it features more traditional spikes but with added improvements. The BIOM G2 features a technical insole system that has silicon printing which will help reduce foot movement and add stability during your swing. In addition the spikes are a SLIM-Lok fitting system by CHAMP Spikes. We tested the traction in a variety of conditions and we were impressed by the foot control we were able to achieve. The feel of the shoes are truly unique and make it easy to know when you have good or bad traction. They also allow you to make adjustments as needed. The spikes locked in nicely to the ground but allowed you to follow through on your swing and did not interrupt the flow. Overall, these spikes performed above average in the elements and provided great traction throughout our testing sessions on the links.
Durability:
Between the extremely impressive production process and the yak leather, this shoe is built to last. It is also treated with HYDROMAX and an anti-stain formula that protects the shoe in the elements. In addition to logging quite a few rounds our spikes continue to show minimal wear and tear. The BIOM G2 will definitely last a few years before you even have to think about a replacement.
