With the New Year comes a clean slate not just for your New Years resolutions, but new music as well. Which artists will make 2016 a year to remember? Panic! At The Disco makes a strong case for themselves with their sorry-not-sorry party anthem Don’t Threaten Me With A Good Time, while many DJs make their case for EDM, with appearances by Tiesto, Axwell^Ingrosso, Martin Garrix and more.
FACT: Kanye West’s FACTS is not yet available on Spotify, but also a FACT: there’s a whole lot of other new musical goodness that is. Head over to Spotify for the full run down. If you missed out on the last music releases of 2015, never fear, New Music Friday All Stars has got you covered.
9. Camera Lens by Luxley
A spirited and fast moving track on which Ryan Gray – a former Med School student who had to follow his musical passions – gives us a lot to look forward to on his forthcoming EP, Spirit. The content of the song hints at more than one’s love affair with taking pictures, and alas Gray told Line of Best Fit, “The story is about three people. Boy is in love with girl, but girl’s in love with a photographer, while photographer has girl on puppet strings. He’s manipulating her the way a photographer manipulates its subject through a camera lens.”
8. People by Kav Verhouzer, LarryKoek
Holland has always been a breeding ground for great EDM, and when two of Holland’s finest come together for a track? You know you’re in for a treat. People sounds like a track you want to listen to at a swim-up pool in the Caribbean (or anywhere there’s a party with people) – it gives way to you losing yourself in the moment – be it a dance-off, fun times with friends, or just failing your arms awkwardly as an attempt at dancing.
7. Pure Grinding Ishi Remix – Avicii
It’s The Case of the Disappearing New Music Friday track – the rousing rendition of an already unique song, which ad-libbed off of the 90s dance classic 100% Pure Love By Crystal Waters, had by Sunday morning disappeared off New Music Friday and from Spotify completely, leaving those who had already added the track to their 2016 hits playlist scratching their heads. Here’s hoping the powers that be release the track again; enjoy the original to tide you over.
6. Propaganda by DJ Snake
As the song takes off, around the 30 second mark they hit turbulence with a Bloody Beetroot vibe, then as the the track gets caught up in a tornado of beats with shout of PROP-A-GAN-DA! DJ Snake’s own point of view from the spin tables takes over. It’s that particular brand of disruptive high voltage energizing EDM that is equally perfect for visions of taking over the world or training insane. A good one to help you kick off your New Years resolution fitness goals.
5. Lean by VHS Collection
A sunny-side up indie tinged track, Lean very well feels like a modern day update on Bill Withers Lean On Me, as the chorus spills out an Oh! You’re gonna lean on your friends, and Oh! You did it again. Because of the easygoing pleasantness that is the track, it can be found in the various courses of your day – late at night, first thing in the morning, and definitely on repeat in the stretch of the afternoon. Great debut.
4. Dance…. by Johnny Rain
With a Weeknd vibe but way more strength in the R&B vocals area, Johnny Rain latest discusses all the party entrapments of the modern age, ultimately asking the question “Who gives a damn if she wants to…dance?” Don’t expect this one to get everybody out to the dance floor though, it’s all about the chill. His latest EP has been out since December 15th; all together the songs that make up the EP paint the picture of an ultra-talented R&B singer on his grind, doing what he what he does best.
3. The Original by Roo Panes
A soft opus of self acceptance, The Original has this Brit bringing out a ton of emotion as he strums his 12 string acoustic guitar, singing “Take me back to me, the original me.” While not present on The Original, Panes has been known to filling the classical folk genre with help from mandolins, violas, and cellos. A truly talented artist with introspective lyrics about life and self make for much to look forward to on the worldwide release of Paperweights, set for March 4th.
2. Piano Song by Eryn Allen Kane
A beautiful and rich vision that not only capitalizes on gentle tones of a grand piano but a full horn section as well, Eryn Allen Kane is known to breathe soul into whatever she’s a part of, and it’s boldly apparent here. The Detroit native who is currently based out of Chicago has recently lent her talents to the Chiraq Soundtrack with an old school soul track, suitably named “Born In Chicago.” Expect big things to come from Kane in 2016.
1. Don’t Threaten Me With A Good Time by Panic! At The Disco
You know you’re in for a good time when a song begins with a lick from the B-52s cult classic Rock Lobster, and even better when the song title is from the short lived (but will live forever in reality TV junkie’s hearts) Bret Michael’s Rock of Love. DTMWAGT is a tribute to a life of excess, epic parties, and all the randomness such a life brings- like roaming the city in a shopping cart. If ever you needed to a song to help you kick off the year, your search can stop here.
