After a week long hiatus to take in a little vacation time, Fresh New Music is back with a list chock full of musical sensations to tickle your eardrums. Blazing hot on this week’s list is Nelly’s partnership with Jeremih for a ‘Fix,’ Leona Lewis’s heartfelt “Another Love Song” and Cazzette’s “State of Bliss.”
Catch up with the entire list on Spotify’s official New Music Friday list. Don’t forget about New Music All Stars, a in-house curated playlist to catch up with all the newness from the last month.
10.) Beverly by Allan Rayman
Starting out with a funky old school beat, Beverly takes your on a lyrical journey about a Cali girl born and bred into life of privilege. The topic may be often explored, but Rayman creates a fresh space for the topic to breathe, giving it a very now vibe. Easy to bop along with it and sing “It don’t matter to her anyway, it don’t matter to her anyway.” The track comes off of his recently released “Hotel Allan” a can’t miss LP full of haunting and striking signature tunes. Be sure to also check out ‘Graceland.’
9.) In Time by FKA Twigs
The soon to be Mrs. Robert Pattinson has had a busy couple of months, but hard work pays off, and her EP M3LLI55X has arrived with five breathy tracks. Having already premiered “In Time” at several festivals this summer, the studio version lifts the song up in all the right places, containing her her soft-spoken voice while hitting irreverent notes that she’s come to be known for. Nominated as an “Artist To Watch” at this year’s VMA’s for “Pendulum,” M3LLI55X will do well to add to the attraction.
8.) Heavy Metal Detox by Wavves
The perfect anti-Carpe Diem song, Wavves paints a picture of the fun to be had when you’re all alone, perhaps from partying too hard the night prior, but as a garage band out of California, it’s their birthright, nay, birth duty. The band will have many opportunities to encapsulate the song’s lyrics, as they are headed out on the road in September in anticipation of their next album, dropping October 2nd. A good one to turn up when you’re pretending you’re not home as there’s a salesperson selling knives at your door.
7.) Your Type by Carly Rae Jepsen
Having already released a staggering 7 singles without an album yet this year, Carly Rae has shown up on New Music Friday’s list once again. True to form, ‘Your Type’ is super catchy and the lyrics an easy learn. It’s the classic tale of a girl pining over a guy she feels is out of her league, much in the way of 2009 Taylor Swift, which is ironic considering both girls are world famous pop stars and gorgeous to boot. For best results sing into a hair brush turned microphone.
6.) High By The Beach by Lana Del Rey
One that is sure to be a hit with the Tumblr crowd, Lana Del Rey’s latest echoes themes used in many of her most popular songs, dreaminess and a melancholy due to a certain we don’t know what. The song comes as the first off her latest album, which of squeals were heard around the world as she revealed said album, Honeymoon, will be out September 18th. Until then be sure to check out the accompanying video to tide you over.
5.) Chocolate Milk by Coucheron, Rye Rye
Hands down the most creative and uniquely executed song on this week’s list, Chocolate Milk pulls in so much bounce and energy that the song’s original name surely must have been Red Bull. To help lay the track down Coucheron pulled in Baltimore’s baddest, Rye Rye, which gives the song its required dose of zing.
4.) Never Ending Circles by Chvrches
Though their name provides a never ending challenge for auto-correct, Chvrches shines easily on their latest. Weighing heavy on the synthesizers, the song starts out with ‘loops’ of its own, lamenting about a relationship that has reached the stage of ‘banging your head against the wall.’ It’s a solid effort, building the case for Every Eye Open, set to be released on September 25th.
3.) Jay Z by Goodbye Tomorrow
The vibe of Jay Z is a toast to the high life, but in an underground invite only rave. It’s only appropriate for the group out of Chicago who Spin describes as essentially anonymous, composed of both rappers and producers. Their first album, A Journey Through The Mind of a Non Believer, is full of influences from Kanye, A$AP Rocky, and of course Jay Z.
2.) Living As A Ghost by GEMS
The sounds created on GEMS latest are so warped and trippy that it makes you wish your iPhone and headphones were waterproof; it just *feels like* that would be the best place to take in the vibrations. The band, who describes themselves as dream wave / shadow pop duo (right on the money with that one) has plans to drop their next album (or possible EP) October 30th, just in time for the eery and spectral vibe of Halloween.
1.) Good Times Roll by GRiZ, Big Gigantic
With a vibe that sounds like it was made for the party of the year, they’ll be no trouble having the good times roll upon pressing play. The song is made in equal efforts from Big Gigantic, a EDM staple at festivals, and GRiZ, who has created a reputation for keeping it funky with their biggest song to date “Smash the Funk.” Play this at the last party of the summer to be sure Summer 2015 goes out with a bang.
