Developed in partnership with SportIQ, this upcoming holiday season (Winter 2014/2015) Wilson Sporting Goods is scheduled to release a next generation basketball engineered to help shooters play their best. This sensor-enabled basketball is equipped to deliver data to either your smart phone or tablet via Bluetooth for analysis and what they’re calling “gamification.” The concept behind the basketball they say will be a paradigm shift in the way aspiring athletes practice and play, moving well beyond existing connected ball technology.

Tom Gruger“We recognize the growing trend around the ‘internet of things’ and are working to deliver real consumer-centric solutions for the world of sport, from training to gaming, we want to delight our target players on this new virtual field of play. Our upcoming basketball launch is the first step in an exciting new area of innovation from Wilson.” -Tom Gruger, VP of Digital for Wilson.

The sensors within the ball can track your makes and misses, dribbling and location on the court. While it won’t be able to make poor shooters into clutch-time rain makers – this new technology is certin to empower basketball players and give them the stats and info they need to hone their game on the court. For a quick look at how the technology works in here’s the product video with the system in action…
