We’ve been reviewing Cardo systems for a few years now and each year they improve their design and capabilities. The Packtalk Edge is just another example of good design mixed with functional applications that make it a leading system in motorcycle communications. What did they improve with this model? Design & Installation
One of the most noticeable changes in this model is the Air Mount design. It’s incredibly simple, very secure, and takes a second to install. The first time I placed the Cardo Edge in the mount it actually surprised me. The magnetic pull was so strong in snapped right out of my fingers and fell securely into the mount. Like other Cardo systems, the initial installation is the same. The JBL speakers and microphone come with adhesives to place on the inside. The speakers tuck away nicely behind the ear pad and the wires can be run between the lining of the helmet and the shell so everything is hidden. Once everything is in place, just slap the Cardo mount on the side and you are good to go. Takes less than 10 minutes to install thanks to the clever design.
Connectivity
Connecting to the Cardo Edge for the first time is easy. You’ll want to download the Cardo App on the playstore, enable your phone’s bluetooth and set the Cardo to pairing mode. The App guides you through the process and once you connect the first time, you’ll automatically be connected each time after you turn on your Cardo system (so long as your phones bluetooth is on). Once your pairing is complete, connecting with other riders is just as easy. Using the Cardo App, you’ll create a group and invite others to join. Once they accept and join the group you can talk freely using the Live Intercom. The connection is possible using the Dynamic Mesh Communications technology.
If you listen to music while you ride, talking is still easy. The auto volume adjusts the sound so you can hear others speak while you ride and vibe. Plus if things get loud while getting up to speed, the volume increases and decreases based on outside noise levels. If you want to adjust the volume manually you can do so with the easy to reach (and feel with gloves on) scroll bar. If you don’t want to use your hand, everything can be adjusted using your voice. Cardo has programmed voice control phrases you can say to adjust the volume, shuffle tracks, and make or answer calls.
Durability
Since the installation, I’ve rode several hundred miles with zero issues. The mount is still secure and held up even while riding in the rain thanks to the waterproof housing. There seems to be no wear or tear with the speakers or microphone after placing the helmet on or removing multiple times a day after months of riding.
Value
While there are other communications systems out there, Cardo has proven they are the leaders through their continued innovation in design and functionality. If you are in the market for a hands-free communications system, I highly recommend the Cardo Packtalk Edge, which is sure to make your riding that much better.
