We reviewed our first Arlo system back in 2015. 10 years later, Arlo has definitely improved in picture quality, smart features, and hardware. In the last several years, there have been a few comparable brands that hit the market, but there has also been a ton of sketchy, cheap, and unreliable hardware that has dropped as well. Although there are other brands with “smarter” features and a lower price tag, Arlo is still one of our favorites because of the easy setup, simple app, and picture quality. Here are a few of our favorites that we recommend if you are looking to upgrade your current Arlo system, or simply getting your first security camera.

Pro 5S 2K Wireless Security Camera

Design and Build

The camera features a sleek new design that is really more of a camera in a shell. Instead of a micro usb, they now have their own charger that attaches to the bottom magnetically. If you need to replace the battery, simply push the button on the bottom to release the camera and slide it out of the shell. This new compact form factor allows for versatile mounting options, including wall or ceiling installations. Plus the integrated spotlight is useful at night for scaring off roaming animals or providing you some light when needed.

Video Quality

Equipped with 2K HDR resolution, the Arlo Pro 5S 2K delivers sharp and detailed video footage. Its 160-degree field of view ensures comprehensive coverage, and the 12x digital zoom allows for closer inspection of specific areas. The camera also supports color night vision, enhancing visibility in low-light conditions. The field of view and color night vision are the biggest improvements.

Connectivity

One of the standout features is its dual-band Wi-Fi support, operating on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies. This flexibility helps maintain a stable and robust connection, reducing potential interference and ensuring reliable performance. I was able to place this much further away than any previous models and there was no loss of signal or lag with captured footage.

Battery Life

The camera boasts an impressive battery life (6-8 months). Depending on the record settings and activity levels, this may vary, but it’s still a big improvement from previous models. This extended battery performance minimizes maintenance and ensures continuous operation.

Value

The Arlo Pro 5S 2K stands out as a high-quality security camera with excellent video resolution, reliable connectivity, and extended battery life. Its wide field of view, color night vision, and integrated spotlight make it a standout home security camera. However, the reliance on subscription services for advanced features and recording are factors to consider. Overall, it is a solid choice for those seeking a comprehensive and reliable home security solution.

Video Doorbell 2K

Design and Build

Arlo’s 2K Video Doorbell boasts a sleek and modern design. Its compact form factor allows for seamless integration with various home exteriors.  The push button allows visitors to notify you directly to your phone. So you can answer without even being home. Simply view them through the integrated camera and begin a two-way conversation. This has already come in handy with UPS and Fedex deliveries when I wasn’t there to sign for the package, but I was able to give consent for them to leave the package at my doorstep.

Video Quality

Equipped with a 2K HDR camera, the doorbell delivers sharp and detailed video footage, ensuring clear visibility of visitors and surroundings. The 180-degree diagonal field of view captures a comprehensive image, including packages left at the doorstep. Additionally, the device features night vision capabilities, maintaining security even in low-light conditions.

Connectivity

The Arlo Video Doorbell 2K offers flexible installation options, supporting both wired and wireless setups. For wireless installations, it connects to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks, providing a stable connection for real-time notifications and live streaming.

Battery Life

In wireless mode, the doorbell operates on a rechargeable battery, offering up to a few months on a single full charge (depending on activity levels and settings). This extended battery life minimizes maintenance and ensures continuous operation.

Value

Priced competitively, the Arlo Video Doorbell 2K provides a robust set of features, including high-resolution video, flexible installation, and smart home compatibility. While advanced functionalities like cloud storage and smart alerts require a subscription to Arlo Secure, the device’s performance and versatility offer significant value for homeowners seeking to enhance their security measures.

Essential Indoor 2nd Gen

Design and Build

Arlo’s 2nd Generation Essential Indoor Camera boasts a compact and modern design, making it suitable for various indoor settings. Its unobtrusive appearance allows it to blend seamlessly into home interiors, providing discreet surveillance without drawing attention.

Video Quality

This camera is available in two resolutions: 1080p and 2K. The 2K model delivers sharp and detailed footage, ensuring clear visibility of monitored areas. It features a 130-degree field of view, allowing comprehensive coverage. The camera also performs well in various lighting conditions and is equipped with night vision.

Connectivity

The Arlo Essential Indoor Camera operates on a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network, offering a stable connection for real-time notifications and live streaming. Because this is an indoor camera, it has a power cord so there’s no need for any additional batteries or recharging. Simply plug and play.

Privacy Features

A notable feature of this camera is its automated privacy shutter, which conceals the lens when the camera is disarmed. This provides users with peace of mind, ensuring that recording only occurs when desired.

Value

Priced at $39.99 for the 1080p version and $79.99 for the 2K model, the Arlo Essential Indoor Camera offers a cost-effective solution for indoor surveillance. While access to recorded video and advanced features requires a subscription to Arlo Secure, the camera’s performance and integration capabilities provide significant value for those seeking reliable indoor security.

Final Notes…

While these cameras offer robust features out of the box, accessing advanced functionalities such as cloud storage and smart alerts requires a subscription to Arlo Secure. Additionally, local storage options are limited without purchasing an optional base station.

If a subscription fee is in the budget for you, then I highly recommend the updated Arlo cameras. These camera’s are easy to setup, have excellent video quality, and long battery life. Plus the wireless design and user-friendly app with real-time notifications and two-way audio make it super convenient when you are miles away from home.
