Now available in more than 100 countries world-wide, Southern Comfort and its closely guarded fruit, spice and whiskey-flavored (secret) recipe has come a long way since its humble beginnings in the taverns and saloons of New Orleans, Louisiana more than 138 years ago when it was originally known by the name “Cuffs and Buttons.” That’s right, Southern Comfort… or as we now like to call it – “SoCo” is the brain-child of MW Heron who wasn’t actually a distiller by trade, but a bartender who knew exactly what his clientele would appreciate most… a smooth refined whiskey drink. Today his unique concoction is bottled in Louisville, Kentucky and is as popular as ever!

Recently SoCo unveiled a new ad campaign with the slogan “Whatever’s Comfortable,” which features a mustached middle aged man with a golden tan and pot-belly showing off his confident swagger at the beach in nothing more than a pair of loafers, speedo and a glass of Southern Comfort. The ad (video embedded below) may not be as glamorous as you’d expect, but it’s a hilarious piece of advertising and certainly drives their point home.

A few weeks ago we were given the opportunity to sit down and have a formal tasting with a few of Southern Comfort’s new and exciting variations, including Lime, Cherry and Pepper. Though we’ll have an opportunity to share our thoughts on these  flavors in the near future we decided it would be best if we kicked things off with the original formula that started it all.

  • Flavors: Vanilla, peach, honey and cinnamon
  • TasteB+ (Very Good)

Overall: We give Southern Comfort a B+ (Highly Recommended) Its un-apologetically sweet without being overpowering. The unique profile and surprisingly smooth finish it delivers makes this liqueur an excellent choice for sipping on the rocks or mixing with a variety of methods. If you’ve never had the pleasure of tasting SoCo for yourself don’t be weary. It’s not truly whiskey at all and its flavors are quite welcoming. The SoCo secret recipe has endured the test of time and in our opinion for good reason… because it’s damn tasty! Do yourself a favor the next time you’re undecided about what to wet your whistle with and do whatever’s comfortable… or make it a SoCo and see what we’re talking about.
