To quote Shaun T, “It’s Bananas!” Or better yet, it’s INSANITY! If you have ever tried a Shaun T workout, more specifically, the original INSANITY, then you know just how insane it really is. However, Shaun T and Beachbody figured out a way to cram all that insanity into just 30 minutes. I’ll admit, I myself am a huge Beachbody fan boy since I’ve just about tried every workout they offer, yes even Hip Hop abs and Brazil Butt lift – you’re welcome Beth Mallo 😉 (my lovely wife). My favorites have always been the original P90X by Tony Horton and of course the original INSANITY by Shaun T. The main drawback with the original workouts is the amount of time it takes to complete (average 45-60+ minutes). When I saw that Beachbody was coming out with an INSANITY that was only 30 minutes I felt it would be just the right amount of craziness that would fit comfortably into my hectic schedule. There is also a 25 minute workout (T25) which I have also tried and it is a good starting point if you want to ease your way into a Beachbody workout. Although my bar was set high for Insanity Max 30, I was not let down at all.

Routine
Similar to the original INSANITY, INSANITY MAX 30 comes with 10 workouts that incorporate a mix of plyometric drills, high intensity interval training, power, strength, resistance, and core training. But just because it’s 30 minutes, don’t think that it is any less intense than the 45+ minutes of original INSANITY. In fact, I would say it is just as insane with a side of bananas. The whole concept of this workout is to MAX OUT. In the beginning, you’ll max out multiple times which is exactly what you want to do.
When you get your body to a level where you are maxing out, you are able to burn an amazing amount of calories and tone your body at a quicker pace. It is a 60 day program that is split into 2 phases. Month 1 you’ll see workouts like Cardio Challenge, Sweat Intervals, Tabata Power, Tabata Strength, and Friday Fight Round 1. Once you’ve had your fill of INSANITY for the first 30 days, you’ll have to make room for another 30 days of MAX OUT INSANITY – which is even more INSANE! You’ll be sweating your way through MAX Out Cardio, MAX Out Sweat, MAX Out Power, MAX Out Strength, and Friday Fight Round 2. Depending when and where you order from, you’ll also get the 2 bonus workouts Pulse and AB Attack: 10, which are a recovery workout and an 10 minute ab workout.
Obviously all the workouts have an “Insane” amount of cardio and the type of moves can be very difficult to some beginners (we’re talking Switch Kicks, Jump Knee Tucks, Plyo-Pushups, and much more), which is why they have a “Modifier” that you can follow along with to see the less intense move and keep going. In some cases when I was just about to Max Out, I switched to the modifier move so I could keep going and stay in that burn mode.
The concept behind Max 30 has been around for a while and is rather simple but very effective. Every workout, you go as hard as you can for as long as you can. When you hit that “wall” and cannot continue then you’ve maxed out. However, once you’ve maxed out, you’re not done yet. Instead, you write down the time when you maxed out and get right back into finishing the workout (after a couple big gasps of air, gulp of water, and a “are you kidding me?”). The following week you simply try to beat your time and keep progressing. Rather you go 30 seconds longer than before, or 10 minutes longer, progress is progress. I found myself getting better results quicker in the first month but I had a harder time progressing during my second as the workouts get a little more extreme.
“INSANITY MAX:30 IS THE HARDEST WORKOUT I’VE EVER TAUGHT.”
—Shaun T, creator of INSANITY® and FOCUS T25
One of the great things about Insanity is that there is no equipment involved. It’s just you and a good pair of cross training shoes. You will use your own bodyweight for resistance and strength training. In the past, I’ve been accustomed to weight training, but the older you get the more you realize the strain it puts on your joints and loss in flexibility. After months of training with my own body weight I’ve noticed a big difference in my mobility and flexibility.
Nutrition Guide
Of course with any workout, there must be a great nutrition plan that will help fuel your body so you can shed the fat and grow lean muscle. Insanity Max 30 comes with a complete Nutrition Plan that shows you what to eat and the correct amount of proportions for your body type. Although this diet plan is great, I highly recommend checking out the 21 Day Fix nutrition plan for a more in depth look on portion control and overall cooking guide. The recipes were easy to follow, but the main thing for me was portion control. By getting in the habit of measuring your food and laying it out on a plate, you’ll begin to see what the correct portions are for your body type. If you don’t have the time to cook every day, there is also a “No time to Cook” guide that gives you tips on what and where to eat when you’re in a hurry.
Results
Just like with anything in life… you get what you put into it. If you simply press play and follow the routine you will get results. However, if you truly want the best results, then you have to push as hard as you can and MAX OUT every day. I knew the routine would help me lean out a little more, but I didn’t want to lose any muscle mass. I wasn’t expecting significant results since I was just coming off of P90X3 and was already in decent shape. However, I was able to shed body fat and lose inches in the right places while maintaining my mass in my upper body. Month 1, I started with 10% body fat and was able to drop it down to 8.3% by the end of Month 2. I lost 1.5 inches off my waist and gained an inch in my arms and calves. Although a couple inches and pounds may not seem like a dramatic amount of change, these were the results I was hoping for. If you are excited about results and want to take it up another notch then I suggest picking up Athos gear. With Athos gear, I was able to keep track of how hard I was actually working each muscle so I knew if I had correct form and when my heart rate was in the burn zone. It actually made Maxing Out more enjoyable since I was in constant competition with myself and previous results for that workout.
Value
If you are looking to simply shed weight and tone up then I am confident that this routine will help get you the results you want. If you are looking to gain muscle then this might not be the best program for you. However, if you want to work on gaining muscle and stay lean, then I recommend using this as your morning workout followed by a great weight routine in the evening. Because Insanity Max 30 is only 30 minutes long, I am able to use it as my morning cardio workout and still have time for Body Beast as my evening weight training routine. At $119.85 or 3 payments of $59.90 (including shipping), it is a good investment. Plus with a 60 day money back guarantee there’s no risk.
