This season’s special flavor from Coors’s Blue Moon brand is well suited for those with a festive set of taste buds. The release, Gingerbread Spiced Ale, was chosen by fans and brought to life by the folks at Blue Moon. Just last week we were able to get our hands on some Gingerbread Spiced Ale to taste and review. Today we’re happy to share our brew review with you.

The beer has a nice color that actually matches the overall color of a typical gingerbread house. For something in the holiday realm, I’d look for this to be a tad darker, but knowing this is from the Blue Moon family, this isn’t out of the ordinary.

Blue-Moon-gingerbread-ColorWhat’s Inside:

  • Malts: Pale, Munich, Caramel, Wheat
  • Hops: Hallertau
  • IBUs: 16
  • ABV: 5.9%

The initial taste of this beer is phenomenal.  It overwhelms you with gingerbread, caramel and a sweet syrupy molassesy taste. This is exactly what you’d think this beer would be from the artsy label. The only negative is that the flavor seemed a bit artificial, similar to a soft drink. After the initial moment however, the taste slid off a cliff. The beer finished horribly, with all of the flavor coming on contact. The final moments left the mouth feeling syrupy with little to no flavor from the initial explosion.

An interesting aspect to the Gingerbread Spiced Ale was the lightness all-together. Most Christmas & Winter Ales are much thicker and heavier. This isn’t a bad thing, but definitely a different thing. I typically enjoy one Winter/Christmas Ale at a sitting, but these were light enough, I could see drinking a few without feeling full.

Blue Moon Gingerbread Spiced Ale - Brew Review
Overall, this beer was interesting as it was a lighter take on a Winter Ale that came out of the gates swinging, but ended up falling short of greatness. This is still a beer that you can definitely enjoy during the Winter season especially if you're into lighter holiday brews.
