If you’re seeking a bold winter beer that packs a kick but goes down easy, this Belgian Quadrupel may be just what you need. This beer will take you on a solid ride is packed with flavor and ABVs but extremely well rounded in both taste and appearance. Ommegang Three Philosophers blends a Belgian-style dark ale and Liefmans Kriek into a caramel-colored heady beer. Before you review at home with us, note that this is recommended to be served at 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

Ommegang Three Philosophers ReviewOnce poured, this ale provides a thick latte-colored head over an inch thick. The color is a tad lighter than we expected from the bottle, but it looks every bit of what you’d expect for a high powered Belgian. This is an opaque, cloudy ale that greets you with a very spicy yet malty aroma that grows as it settles.

What’s Inside:

  • Malts: Pils, amber, caramel, Munich, Xtra Special
  • Hops: Spalt Select and Styran Golding
  • Spices: None
  • Blended With: 2% Liefmans Kriek
  • Yeast: Ommegagn house yeast
  • IBU: 19
  • ABV: 9.7%

When tasting, this brew greets you with a blast of molassesy malt goodness that is electric on the tongue. The taste has the expected bitterness of a quadrupel with the sweetness of brown sugar that peaks mid-taste and slowly retreats once you’ve swallowed. The beer finishes extremely well as the taste slowly fades off the tongue, leaving the drinker craving more. This beer is so strong and unique that I’m not sure what you would pair with other than a bold cheese. Overall, this is a well crafted beer that starts strong, climaxes mid-sip and ends with an excellent finish.
