Recently introduced by our pals at The Oven as the “new face of confidence,” the Nike Method Core MCO2w is one of the newest editions to Nike Golf ‘s updated Method putter franchise – better known as the Method Core Weighted series. Utilizing fixed weights at the heel and sole, the Nike Method Core MCO2w putter is able to provide proper weighting by length (at 33″, 34″ and 35″). These same weights help to lower the center of gravity as well as move the center of gravity away from the face. All for what you might be asking? Well, the answer is simply really… to help you find the hole more consistently.

Most people don’t realize that they are about 3/10 of an inch above the ground at impact. You need to keep the center of gravity of the putter as low as you can so that it never gets higher than the CG of the ball. This stops the putter from driving the ball down and creating backspin on the ball. With the Method Core Weighted technology, we worked to get the center of gravity lower than the ball, enabling the putter to rise up at impact, lift the ball and turn it over quickly. -David Franklin, Nike Golf Master Modelmaker

Utilizing revolutionary technology like Polymetal Grooves and a milled face combined with major-winning innovation, the Nike Method Core MCO2w is said to deliver stability and confidence for clutch putts in big moments. The Method Core’s unique face insert is a combination of aluminum and polymer grooves engineered to deaden impact and vibrations and provide pure sound and feel.

A few weeks ago the nice people at Nike Golf reached out and asked if we could put their new scoring stick to the test. Of course we obliged and hours after receiving the demo model we were off to the practice green where we became quickly familiar with the MCO2w and its abilities. Putter choices are a very personal thing and we know this. During our testing sessions we allowed several reviewers to put the MOC2w to test and voice their opinions about this putter. Below you’ll find the results of our testing sessions. The good, the bad and the ugly…

– Method Core MCO2w Review –

Feel:

(8.5 out of 10) Some of the most important factors when choosing a flat stick is whether or not if feels good in your hands, gives you confidence at address and throughout your putting motion. Additionally, the feedback a putter provides at impact is also crucial. During our time spent testing the Nike Method Core MCO2w we noticed that it is a very well balanced putter that is easy to keep on-line. The tapered (Nike) grip is soft and a bit tacky, making it easy to grasp the putter with very little pressure and still have full control of the weighted head though impact. At impact we are happy to report that the polymetal grooves and face insert proved to deliver a soft, yet crisp strike that sends the ball rolling nicely. On the negative side, toe and heel strikes feel harsh and provide very little forgiveness. Giving you all the more reason to find the center every time!

Design:

(9 out of 10) If you ask us traditional blade style putters are simply elegant and timeless. It’s hard to say anything bad about this classic design. Not to mention the chrome satin finish Nike outfitted the MCO2w with is fantastic and even serves a purpose beyond its good looks. It actually reduces glare from the sun making it easier to focus on the ball and alignment. On the technical side. The milled face and polymetal grooves are precisely machined and supply an amazingly flush face despite the varying textures.

Alignment:

(8 out of 10) With nothing more than a single line located behind the face of the putter for alignment, Nike employs the K.I.S.S. methodology – “keep it simple stupid.” And what’s worked for 100’s of years lining up traditional putters continues to work quite well for the MCO2w as well. Though in a perfect world we might have liked to see that line extended to the top edge of the putter.

Distance Control:

(9.5 out of 10) This is where the MCO2w truly shines in our opinion. When compared to similar style putters we had in-house (STX Sync 8 and Never Compromise Gambler) the Method Core MCO2w proved to be surprisingly accurate on putts of 15, 25 and 30 feet. In fact, in side-by-side testing the MCO2w was 8 inches closer to the hole on average from putts of 20 feet and longer. From shorter distances (5 feet and in) this putter was absolutely clutch as well… rarely leaving a putt short, which is the key to lowering putts per round. After several hundred putts and countless hours on the practice green we came away most impressed with Nike’s polymetal grooves which allow the MCO2w’s 2 degrees of loft to propel the golf ball forward with more top spin and less skipping than we’ve encountered with previous putters we’ve tested.

Value:

(9 out of 10) Dropping nearly $150 on a single club isn’t easy to swallow, but if you’re a golfer who’s constantly leaving your putts short while your playing partners call you “Sally,” the MCO2w in our opinion is a wise investment into your short game and possibly your self esteem. And let’s be honest here, most of the shots gained or lost on the golf course happen on or near the greens. A good putter can make a world of difference and we think this one is well worth the asking price.

The Bottom Line:

If you’re a golfer who’s in the market for a new putter this season with understated style, back to basics alignment and pleasant top-spin that will help you get it to the hole more often we highly recommend you give the Nike Method Core MCO2w a whirl on the practice greens of your local sporting goods store or pro shop. Its the kind of putter that won’t garner much attention from your playing partners while stashed in your bag, but makes its presence known on the greens.
