Described by Cobra with words like – “explosive distance”, “maximum forgiveness” and “pinpoint accuracy” the recently released AMP CELL Irons are packed with the latest in technology and styling Cobra Golf‘s engineers had at their disposal.  Cobra AMP CELL Irons are said to be ideal for higher handicap golfers and are capable of generating faster ball speeds with optimized CG for improved MOI, distance and forgiveness. That might sound like bunch of hype to the average golf skeptic… and we agree. That’s why when the nice folks over in Carlsbad, CA reached out to us with news of their latest set of game-improvement irons we answered back with a request demand to put their irons to the test!

Fast forward two weeks… and as luck would have it Cobra actually called us out with a shiny new set of demo AMP CELL‘s delivered directly to our office. “How nice” our marketing intern exclaimed… while I rounded up the review crew and proclaimed “let’s get down to business!” Which is exactly what we did – on the range, in the simulator and (of course) on the course.

FEEL:

(9.5 out of 10) In our opinion, the Cobra AMP CELL Irons feature some of the best feel in the irons game right now. We’ve tested A LOT of irons this season and Cobra tops the charts in the feel department!

AMP CELL Irons Review

The AMP CELL Irons have excellent Lampkin (REL 3GEN 360) grips that feel just right in your hands. They’re tacky, yet not overly sticky. We loved these grips!! The irons are also weighted nicely and give a truly balanced feel overall. Not only do they swing nicely they also sound good too – with one of our reviewers stating “striking the ball with an AMP CELL 6-iron is like music to my ears.” A statement the rest of our review crew couldn’t argue with!

Scared of bad vibrations? Well… Cobra’s got you covered in this department as well with their CELL Vibration Dampening System which actually tunes down vibrations for a better sound and feel with the use of a thermoplastic urethane backplate tucked into the cavity-back. As for its effectiveness… we can attest no “stingers” were recorded during our testing sessions.

DESIGN:

AMP CELL Irons Review(9 out of 10) Visually the AMP CELL’s are at the peak of this year’s iron offerings. They have a traditional cavity-back look at approach with some fantastic styling queues in the cavity-back itself that look great while going for the green in 2 or simply clanking around in your golf bag as you make your way around the course. These irons are definitely eye catching, and we got more than a few compliments around the clubhouse at our home course! In fact, the AMP CELL’s even come in four color-fill variations, including – blue, red, orange and silver. We choose the subdued silver set for our testing sessions, but have to say that the Rickie Fowler inspired Orange option is also pretty hot.

With the AMP CELL Irons it’s not all just good looks and terrific feel. As we found out during our time on the range and simulator these irons feature some unique technologies that are optimized for mid to high handicap golfers. A few design aspects that caught our attention as we were shaggin’ balls on the range were the internal CELL weighting – which gives each individual iron in the set precise CG placement, making the “Sweet Spot” easier to find while also creating some impressive ball speed numbers as well.

Additionally, we were also very impressed with the AMP CELL’s V-Skid sole which delivers smooth turf interaction and makes these irons very easy to hit from the fairway, even on tight lies.

DISTANCE:

(7 out of 10) While they’re not the longest irons we’ve tested this season, the AMP CELL’s are still impressively long. Simulator testing provided us with statistics that on-average our review crew (consisting of 8 golfers w/ low to mid handicaps) gained +4.7 yards when compared to their current iron distances. Not a huge jump in distance, but all-around positive if you’re looking to gain a little distance from the fairway and on the par 3’s.

CONSISTENCY:

(9 out of 10) Overall we found these irons to be incredibly consistent in both distance control and ball flight. They were also highly accurate (to our delight!) when struck in the sweet spot. On average we found that there was very little variation in distance control +/- 1.3 yards on average in 6-iron thru PW while 3, 4 and 5 irons were a little less consistent at +/- 2.9 yards of variation on average. That being said – we were still very happy with the consistancy results the AMP CELL Irons produced.

On the other hand… with off-center shot you can through consistency right out the window as you might imagine. Our results on off-center “miss-hits” was actually hard to quantify. Moral of the story? Hit it flush every time and you’ll learn your distances and carry within a yard or two.

FORGIVENESS:

(8 out of 10) The AMP CELL Irons are actually pretty forgiving in our opinion. Perfect for the mid-to-high handicappers looking to get a little more enjoyment out of the game. On off-center shots the ball is typically less than accurate to the target and even loses distance as you’d probably expect, but in our experiences still maintained an impressive overall trajectory much to our surprise. Due in large part to the V-Skid sole and the Cobra’s elliptical “Sweet Spot” E9 Face Technology. Which kept our miss-hits closer to the target line on average by 17% when compared to our testers personal iron sets.

While these irons won’t be the end-all-be-all cure to your banana ball woes, but they’re certainly a step in the right direction for golfers who are looking for a little more leeway in their golf stroke. Besides who couldn’t use 17% more forgiveness anyways?!?

VALUE:

(9.5 out of 10) Dropping 700 smack-a-roos on some irons isn’t going to be in everyone’s budget, but if you’re a mid/high handicap golfer who is very serious about stepping your game up and shaving strokes off your scorecard these irons would be a wise investment. Yes, I said investment. The AMP CELL Irons are high quality and deliver on their game improving promises. Making them well worth the asking price in our opinion.

THE BOTTOM LINE:

We truly recommend the Cobra AMP CELL Irons to all golfers who have trouble breaking 80, 90 or 100+. These irons have just about everything you could ask for in game-improvement… or as Cobra likes to call them  “Game-Enjoyment” irons, including – superior styling, impressive forgiveness, consistency and no lack of distance. We’ve hit thousands of balls with these irons and were pleasantly surprised with our results which were nothing less than fantastic!

Liking what we’ve had to say about the AMP CELL Irons, but aren’t quite sure they’re right for you? Well, give them a whirl yourself. It’s the best way to find out what best suits your game anyways. In fact, we strongly encourage you to track down a demo set at your local pro shop or sporting goods store and feel them out yourself. Though we’re quite certain you’ll come away with the same impressions we did, it’s always nice to take a test run before dropping a stack of Benjamins on anything.
